What the numbers mean for a pour

Pours needed with a limit of 3/8 in per pour. Worked out with the layer planner.

The data sheet describes the wait in words only (“allow each layer to cure before adding the next (no time given)”), so no time is calculated.

What the manufacturer says

Paraphrased from the manufacturer’s documents.

Intended use

  • Alumilite pitches it for coating and finishing jobs such as bar tops and floors as well as clear castings.TDS

Heat

  • The TDS lists a heat deflection temperature of 130°F for the cured resin.TDS

Temperature

  • For pours of 2 gallons or more Alumilite suggests keeping the room near 65°F and running fans to shed heat.TDS

UV and color

  • The resin has UV inhibitors but will still yellow over time, and Alumilite generally does not recommend it for outdoor use.TDS

Other notes

  • Mix about 3-5 minutes until no swirls remain, then 2 more minutes, because the two parts differ in viscosity.TDS
  • Vacuum degassing can be used to remove air before pouring when large areas are coated with drill-mixed resin.TDS
  • The TDS states compliance with FDA CFR 177.2600; the product page limits food-contact claims to incidental contact once fully cured with no additives.TDS
  • The TDS lists tensile strength of 8000 psi and elongation of 1-3%.TDS
  • The product page recommends pouring at humidity below 60% to avoid cloudiness and bubbles.Page

Part A hazard statements

  • H315 Causes skin irritation
  • H317 May cause an allergic skin reaction
  • H319 Causes serious eye irritation
  • H411 Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects

Part B hazard statements

  • H302 Harmful if swallowed
  • H314 Causes severe skin burns and eye damage
  • H317 May cause an allergic skin reaction
  • H318 Causes serious eye damage
  • H361 Suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child

  • H412 Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects

Protective equipment

  • Wear impervious gloves such as butyl or nitrile rubber.
  • Wear chemical safety glasses or goggles.
  • If ventilation is inadequate when using the hardener, wear a fitted NIOSH-approved air-purifying respirator with organic vapor cartridges; use supplied air for high exposures or emergencies.
  • An eye wash station and washing facility should be available in the work area.

Ventilation

  • Use the resin with adequate general or local exhaust ventilation.
  • The hardener SDS gives the same ventilation instruction.

A summary, not the full SDS. Read the SDS for both parts before use and follow its first-aid section in case of exposure. This is not medical advice.

Where the manufacturer’s documents disagree

  • Demold: Demold Time 24 hours (TDS) vs. typically demolds in 24-48 hours (product page FAQ) (TDS, Page). The table shows the value from the TDS.
  • Recommended temperature: ideal working temperature is around 65-75°F (TDS) vs. between 70°F and 80°F (21°C to 27°C) (product page FAQ) (TDS, Page). The table shows the value from the TDS.
  • Mix ratio by volume (A:B): 1:1 by weight or volume (TDS spec table) vs. 1:1 by Volume (TDS body text; product page '1:1 by volume ratio') (TDS, Page). The table shows the value from the TDS.
  • Shelf life: Shelf Life 1 Year (TDS table) vs. shelf life of 12 months (TDS page 2 note) vs. shelf life of 6 months (TDS 'Open Time & Mixing' paragraph) (TDS, TDS, TDS).
