A 1:1 coating resin designed mainly for artwork. ArtResin's documents give about 1/8 in per pour, 40 to 60 minutes of working time, and 3 to 5 hours before the next layer, in a 75 to 85 °F room.

Pouring
Maximum pour depth per layeraround 1/8" (3 mm) per pourFAQrecommended thickness per pour to avoid trapped bubbles (published as 1/8 in / 3 mm); the resin self-levels to about 1/8 in; thicker builds are poured in multiple 1/8 in layers

Pot life40-60 min at 23-25ºC / 72-77ºF (published as 'Working Time / Pot Life')TDSat 23-25ºC / 72-77ºF; the TDS gives one value for working time and pot life together
Working time40-60 min at 23-25ºC / 72-77ºFTDSat 23-25ºC / 72-77ºF; FAQ gives about 45 minutes, about 10 minutes less if the resin is pre-warmed
Time between poursabout 3-5 hours (gel stage)FAQgel-stage method: pour the next 1/8 in layer once the previous one reaches a gel-like stage; alternative: let the layer fully cure, sand lightly, clean, then pour

What the numbers mean for a pour

Pours needed with a limit of 1/8 in per pour. Worked out with the layer planner.

Total thicknessPoursEarliest start of last pourNotes
1 in (25 mm)821 h after the first, if the conditions below are met–
2 in (51 mm)1645 h after the first, if the conditions below are met–

What the manufacturer says

Paraphrased from the manufacturer’s documents.

Other notes

  • The TDS gives the weight of one gallon of resin as 9.4562476 lbs and one gallon of hardener as 8.055 lbs.TDS
  • One gallon of hardener weighs 8.055 lbs per the TDS.TDS
  • The SDSs list density 1.14 for the resin and 0.96 for the hardener, without a unit.SDS A
  • ArtResin reaches about 95% hardness after 24 hours but is not fully cured until about 72 hours.FAQ
  • Colorants should not exceed 6% of the total mixed volume or the resin may not cure properly.FAQ
  • The TDS advises wearing gloves and working in a well-ventilated area.TDS

Coverage

  • The TDS states that 4 oz covers 1 sq ft.TDS

Layering

  • ArtResin is designed for thin layers and self-levels to about 1/8 in; more depth is built with multiple thin layers rather than one thick pour.FAQ
  • Alternatively, let the first layer cure fully, sand lightly while wearing a dust mask, remove the dust and pour the next layer.FAQ

Heat

  • Cured ArtResin is rated for applications up to 50ºC / 122ºF.TDS
  • Mixed resin left too long in the cup or poured too thick can overheat and flash cure, so pour right after mixing and work in thin layers.FAQ

UV and color

  • ArtResin contains UV stabilisers and HALS to slow yellowing, but deliberate UV exposure is not recommended.FAQ

Intended use

  • ArtResin is designed mainly as a coating for artwork and creative work, not for heavy-use surfaces.FAQ

Temperature

  • Keep conditions steady for the first 24 hours of cure.FAQ

Safety data sheet summary

Signal word: WarningSDS A

Part A hazard statements

  • H315 Causes skin irritation
  • H317 Repeated and prolonged exposure may cause skin sensitization
  • H319 Causes eye irritation

Part B hazard statements

  • H315 Causes skin irritation
  • H317 May cause an allergic skin reaction
  • H319 Causes eye irritation

Protective equipment

  • Wear impervious gloves.
  • Use an organic-chemical cartridge respirator when working in a non-ventilated area.
  • The hardener SDS gives the same glove and respirator recommendations.

Ventilation

  • Good general ventilation is the listed engineering control, and work should be done in a well-ventilated area.
  • The hardener SDS also says to work in a well-ventilated area.

A summary, not the full SDS. Read the SDS for both parts before use and follow its first-aid section in case of exposure. This is not medical advice.

Where the manufacturer’s documents disagree

  • Heat resistance: up to 50ºC / 122ºF (TDS) vs. up to 120°F (50°C) (FAQ) (TDS, FAQ).
