A 2:1 clear casting epoxy used with Entropy's slow hardener, poured up to 1 in deep. Entropy gives a 360 minute pot life at 77 °F and says to pour the next layer when the previous one feels tacky, without stating hours.

What the numbers mean for a pour

Pours needed with a limit of 1 in per pour. Worked out with the layer planner.

Total thicknessPoursEarliest start of last pourNotes
1 in (25 mm)1no wait (one pour)–
2 in (51 mm)2not published–
3 in (76 mm)3not published–
4 in (102 mm)4not published–

The data sheet describes the wait in words only (“when the previous 1" pour becomes tacky (feels like the backside of masking tape)”), so no time is calculated.

What the manufacturer says

Paraphrased from the manufacturer’s documents.

Intended use

  • The slow CCS hardener is meant for high-build casting, while the fast CCF hardener is for quick, small projects such as jewelry.TDS

Layering

  • Castings deeper than 1 in are built up in multiple layers.Page

Temperature

  • Small castings benefit from a 24-hour post-cure at 100°F (38°C) to ensure full cure.Page
  • Work in a controlled environment and avoid high humidity and cold temperatures.Page

Heat

  • At higher working temperatures, pour smaller amounts to avoid excessive exotherm.Page
  • Ultimate Tg (DSC midpoint) for the slow system is 127ºF/52ºC per the TDS.TDS

Other notes

  • For best results, weigh the two components to within 5% of the recommended mix ratio and mix at least two minutes while scraping the container.Page
  • The CCS Slow Hardener SDS gives a relative density of 0.95 at 20°C and a bulk density of 7.95 lbs/gal (0.95 kg/L), matching the TDS hardener value.SDS B
  • The resin SDS does not publish a relative density.SDS A

Surface preparation

  • Amine blush can form in cool, moist conditions; it is water-soluble and removed with clean water and an abrasive pad before further bonding.Page

Coverage

  • Kit yields are given by volume, e.g. a 1.5 gal kit covers 346 cu in and a 3 gal kit 691 cu in; coverage drops up to 50% over porous substrates or fiber.Page

Safety data sheet summary

Signal word: DangerSDS A

Part A hazard statements

  • H315 Causes skin irritation
  • H317 May cause an allergic skin reaction
  • H319 Causes serious eye irritation
  • H360F May damage fertility
  • H411 Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects

Part B hazard statements

  • H314 Causes severe skin burns and eye damage
  • H402 Harmful to aquatic life

Protective equipment

  • For the resin, wear PVC or rubber gloves to minimise skin contact and use protective safety glasses.
  • Workers exposed above the exposure limit must wear appropriate certified respirators (resin SDS).
  • For the hardener, chemical-impervious gloves are required, along with safety glasses with side shields.
  • The hardener SDS calls for chemical-resistant clothing such as coveralls or an apron and boots.
  • Use a NIOSH/MSHA-approved respirator when concentrations exceed permissible exposure limits (hardener SDS).

Ventilation

  • Provide adequate ventilation, preferably local exhaust plus good general extraction; if that cannot keep vapour below exposure limits, wear respiratory protection.
  • The hardener SDS gives the same ventilation guidance.

A summary, not the full SDS. Read the SDS for both parts before use and follow its first-aid section in case of exposure. This is not medical advice.

Where the manufacturer’s documents disagree

  • Pot life: 360 min @ 77ºF/25ºC (TDS) vs. 360 min pot life, tests conducted at 95ºF/35ºC (product page) (TDS, Page). The table shows the value from the TDS.
