A 1:1 artist's coating resin. TotalBoat's data sheet gives 1/8 to 1/4 in per pour, 4 to 8 hours between pours while the previous layer can still be dented with a fingernail, and a 70 to 80 °F working range.

What the numbers mean for a pour

Pours needed with a limit of 1/4 in per pour. Worked out with the layer planner.

Total thicknessPoursEarliest start of last pourNotes
1 in (25 mm)412 h after the first, if the conditions below are met–
2 in (51 mm)828 h after the first, if the conditions below are met–
3 in (76 mm)1244 h after the first, if the conditions below are met–
4 in (102 mm)1660 h after the first, if the conditions below are met–

Only if these published conditions are met: step pouring: pour next layer when previous layer has cooled but is soft enough to indent with a fingernail; if cured beyond that, scuff with a Scotch-Brite pad before the next layer

What the manufacturer says

Paraphrased from the manufacturer’s documents.

Other notes

  • The TDS gives resin (Part A) density as 9.7 lbs/gal and hardener (Part B) density as 8.2 lbs/gal at 77°F; these are per-part densities in lb/gal, not specific gravities, so they are not entered in the SG fields.TDS
  • Hardener (Part B) density is listed as 8.2 lbs/gal at 77°F.TDS
  • Gel time for a 150 g mass at 77°F is listed as 1 hour.TDS
  • Cured density is published as 1.11 g/cm³ (cured solid, not mixed liquid).TDS
  • Although working time can reach 60 minutes, TotalBoat strongly recommends mixing only what can be applied in 20 minutes.TDS
  • Time to sand (optional) is 8-10 hours at 77°F.TDS
  • The TDS advises working in well-ventilated areas and wearing gloves, eye protection and clothing protection, noting the products may cause skin and respiratory allergic reactions.TDS

Layering

  • Multiple thin step pours give the best results; if the previous layer has cured past the fingernail-soft stage, scuff it with a Scotch-Brite pad and clean off residue before pouring again.TDS

Heat

  • Items hotter than 110°F should not be placed on the cured MakerPoxy surface.TDS
  • Mixing resin and hardener is exothermic, and larger mixed quantities get hotter.TDS

Coverage

  • A 1-gallon kit of mixed MakerPoxy covers roughly 12 sq ft at 1/8 in or 6 sq ft at 1/4 in.Page

UV and color

  • The UV-resistant formula is not meant for prolonged outdoor sun exposure; TotalBoat suggests overcoating with a UV-protective varnish.Page

Surface preparation

  • Surfaces must be dry, clean and free of dust, dirt, oil and grease, with plastic sheeting (not paper) laid around the work area.TDS

Where the manufacturer’s documents disagree

  • Working time: 10-60 minutes @ 77°F (TDS) vs. 60 minutes @ 77°F (product page specifications) (TDS, Page). The table shows the value from the TDS.
